Back to Work 2017 - Charleston Civic Center

Our return to work meetings for 2017 kicked off with an all employees kickoff bash. All of our employees gathered at the Charleston Civic Center. Our keynote speaker was Jeremy McGhee, an adaptive action sports athlete from California. Jeremy shared with us his story about how he was injured in an accident that ultimately has put him in a wheelchair for life. He spoke of his journey with his team to climb Bloody Couloir, the second tallest mountain peak in the Eastern Sierras, and then the thrill of skiing down the same mountain after reaching the summit. His main message was about giving your best and working hard with your team to achieve great success.

Our safety director, Joe Burgess, followed our keynote speaker with a presentation of this year's safety theme and program, Carry the Flag. Chet Rodabaugh introduced our superintendents and each superintendent presented their foremen with flags to be flown at our job sites and locations. Bob Brookover shared a 2017 outlook and announced any new equipment for 2017.

After lunch, winners for door prizes were drawn and there was an awards presentation for 2016 safety awards, Asphalt Pavement Association of West Virginia paving awards, and the National Asphalt Pavement Association's Quality in Construction Awards.

Our 2016 safety award winners:
Winchester Area - Scott Huffman
Elkins Area - Eddie Mayle
Dunbar Area Road - Jerry Holbert
Beckley Area Road - Avery Byers
Dunbar Area Plant - Keith Marlow
Beckley Area Plant - Paul Bennett
Overall Safety Award 2016 - Ward Teter

2014 Back To Work Letter to Our Employees
Joe Burgess - Safety Director, West Virginia Paving

PictureJoe Burgess - Safety Director, West Virginia Paving
I know some of you have been back for a little while but I think this is the first big week of getting back to work. So as we begin the 2014 paving season and get back to work we need to remember to get back to the basics. Remember the key to staying safe begins with you doing your risk assessments and identifying the hazards around you. Not only should this be done before work begins but anytime there is a change in tasks or something changes with you surroundings, new hazards need to be identified.

Second always remember to look out for each other and make sure when you see something to stop and do
something
to correct any unsafe acts or conditions. You have the power to correct hazardous conditions and by you speaking up and preventing unsafe acts or conditions you may just save a person’s life.

Teamwork is vital in everything we do in being successful in our everyday tasks. It takes a team to build that road, a team to supply that material, a team to get the work we need to give our employees jobs, and a team to run this company. Also it takes a team to keep everyone safe and by your crews being a part of the team it allows us to be successful in sending everyone home to their families every day! Get them involved in the safety aspects of your everyday tasks.

Please make sure you stress to your crews the importance of Near Miss reporting. We need to use this information to alert other employees of situations that may occur on their jobsites and may just prevent someone from getting injured or worse killed. By reporting near misses not only are we watching out for our own crew but for the other employees that we send these alerts to. Please use the app for near miss reporting and also they can be listed on your toolbox talk meetings. I know that some near misses may seem to minor to report but someone else out there may not encounter that as much as you and if we don’t alert them of what you have seen then that could be the one fatal mistake we have by not sharing a near miss.

Again welcome back and thanks for the hard work and for making us Number 1 in 2013 and more important for helping us be successful in sending our employees home safe in 2013. Let’s make 2014 an even better year and send everyone home with Zero Incidents.
